Background of the Study
Budgeting is a crucial financial tool that enables businesses to plan, control, and allocate resources effectively. In the restaurant industry, where profit margins can be slim, effective budgeting practices are essential for long-term success. Port Harcourt, a growing metropolitan city in Nigeria, is home to a diverse array of restaurants, many of which face financial challenges due to inadequate budgeting practices (Eke & Okoro, 2024).
Despite the importance of budgeting, many restaurant owners in Port Harcourt lack formal financial training, leading to poor resource allocation and financial mismanagement. As a result, these businesses struggle to achieve profitability and sustainability. This study evaluates the budgeting practices of restaurant owners in Port Harcourt, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses while offering recommendations for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Inefficient budgeting practices are a major barrier to financial stability among restaurant owners in Port Harcourt. Many businesses operate without a structured budgeting process, resulting in overspending, underinvestment, and limited profitability.
Existing research on budgeting practices in Nigeria has largely focused on larger industries, leaving a gap in understanding how small and medium-sized businesses, such as restaurants, approach financial planning. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the budgeting practices of restaurant owners in Port Harcourt and their impact on financial performance.
